Yorkshire under 17s going well.

Posted by Tony Hutton

Thursday 31st May saw Yorkshire under 17s back in one day cup action against Durham at the Feethams, Darlington.  They had won their first match in this competition by six wickets away to Cheshire at Neston some ten days ago, when fifties from George Hill and Chris Wood and a good all round bowling performance had seen them comfortably home.

Today's game was their second of four in the northern group against a Durham side who have already lost two and won one. Yorkshire won the toss and put Durham in on a hot and humid day after the early morning mist had given way to really warm sunshine throughout the game. Things went Yorkshire's way from the word go after an early run out brought the dismissal of Adam Khan going for an impossible run.

Durham on the defensive.

The introduction of spin with left armer Harry Sullivan brought the second wicket when Jonathan Bushnell was easily caught by skipper Wharton for what proved to be top score for Durham of 20.
A slight recovery took the home side to 45-2 with Sol Bell, who has already played for Durham second eleven looking good. However the medium pace of James Mukerjee saw him off caught behind by Harry Duke.

This precipitated a mid-inning collapse with 59-3 turning very quickly into 72-8 thanks to two left arm spinners Harry Sullivan and Sam Wisniewski. Sullivan has already shown his worth with the Yorkshire Academy side in recent weeks and completed a fine spell with figures of 10-4-24-3. His partner in crime Wisniewski proved very difficult to score from and frustration led to two batsman going down the wicket and both were stumped by yards by efficient keeper Harry Duke.

Sam Wisniewski is introduced into the attack and gains the attention of the large spectator walking his dog in the background.
Harry Sullivan bowling with the score on 66-6.

Wisniewski's final figures were 9-5-12-3 and when he was replaced by another spinner in Chris Wood, the last two wickets fell to him very quickly after James Hindmarsh had made a defiant 12 not out. So a good all round performance by the Yorkshire boys with tight bowling accompanied by good fielding.
Job well done as the Yorkshire players leave the field.

The Yorkshire coach was not complacent at the interval and seemed to think this could still be a close encounter. His fears proved unfounded very quickly with openers Wharton and Revis starting off in fine style and putting on 63 for the first wicket before Revis, who had been the dominant partner, was caught at short leg for 40 when another spinner Feroz Marron was introduced. Number three George Hill was out cheaply caught and bowled again by Marron and when Wharton was run out for 32 Durham suddenly realised that they were not completely out of the game.

Yorkshire digging in.

The appreciative crowd at the Feethams.

No more scares though and York's Finlay Bean and Woodhouse Grange's Chris Wood saw Yorkshire home very comfortably by seven wickets when only half way through their fifty overs. Durham fought back well towards the end but were undone by their inability to deal with the Yorkshire spinners. Yorkshire will now go forward to home games with Lancashire and Derbyshire on the 17th and 24th June, both at Weetwood, and should gain a place in the semi-finals, particularly if they can beat Lancashire.
