BELL CHIMING AGAIN
By Brian Sanderson,
The clouds looked very dark as I walked through the Headingley gates and after four balls Yorkshire were off the field. The weather forecast was again rain and the rain shower lasted about ten minutes.Plunkett and Pattinson batted with easy and put on a stand of 106.
However the highlight of the day was Yorkshire Foundaton Cricket Archives were given a letter written from Hedley Verity dated October 1938 from a ship taking him on a tour of South Africa.
William Roberts, the cricket memorabilia seller, said that there were few letter signed by Verity around.
After lunch I went over to the Yorkshire Supporters cabin, photographed at the start of the blog, it had moved to a new site behind the White Rose Stand. Here I purchased the leaflet "Down the Decades "
In side it gives information about previous Warwicks matches starting in 1954. At this time Tony Hutton lived in Birmingham and was able to talk about some of the players. This included Raymond Hitchcock who was born in Christchurch New Zealand. He was a leg break bowler who played 319 matches for Warwick.
Back to the match Pattinson was out third ball after lunch scoring 43.Then we were entertain by Plunkett and Brooks putting on another 44 .Yorkshire finishing on 444 with David Shrpherd hopping up in the Umpire after life.Plunkett made his highest Championship score for five years. My feelings were that Yorkshire had batted on to long taking too much time out of the match so causing a draw.
Warwick soon lost wickets and were 25 for 2 when Bell came to the crease. He has scored half century or more in each of the five matches he has played so far this season and has average of 92.6.Warwick was soon down to 88 for 5 with prospect of bowling Warwick out this evening. However Bell and Woakes but on a 40 run stand before Woakes was bowled by Williamson charging down the wicket. Not a Test players shot when the day was nearly over however Yorkshire will take it.
Warwick finished on 136 for 6 so we will see what to-morrows play and weather brings. The blog title came from BBC report of the match. It makes some of my titles look quite good.
