National Club KO

posted by John Winn

The quarter finals of the National Club KO will be played on Sunday and the ties are as follows

East Grinstead (Sussex Premier) v Bath (West of England Premier)

Wanstead and Snaresbrook (Essex Premier) v  High Wycombe (Home Counties Premier)

Wolverhampton (Birmingham and District ) v Ockbrook and Borrowash (Derbyshire Premier)

York (Yorkshire Premier North) v Ormskirk (Liverpool and District)

The last of these is probably the most eye-catching given that York only reached this stage following the expulsion of holders South Northumberland but several of the other six teams have form in this competition. Ormskirk, currently runaway leaders of their league, reached the semi finals last year and Bath, High Wycombe, and Wanstead and Snaresbrook have all reached the last eight in recent seasons.

The county championship makes a welcome return on Sunday, if only for one round of matches, with leaders Essex coming to North Marine Road. Both sides will be weakened by test calls and injuries but the forecast for Scarborough for Sunday looks a little more settled and no doubt there will be a very healthy crowd in attendance. Second place Lancashire travel to third place Hampshire and champions Middlesex, without Roland-Jones and Malan, have current wooden spoonists Warwickshire as visitors.

In the second division leaders Notts travel the few miles along the A52 to play East Midlands rivals Derbyshire and Sussex are the visitors to New Road. Durham with successive wins under their belt go to Grace Road to face bottom club Leicestershire with whom they are level on points. Durham's overseas player, Tom Latham who replaced Stephen Cook at the beginning of July but who has been injured is currently (11:15 Tuesday) at the crease for Durham II at High Wycombe v MCC YC and one assumes that he may be available for Sunday.

Finally I note that Steven Finn has been called up to the England squad for the fourth test beginning on Friday. Is this on the strength of the 23 runs he has scored in championship cricket this season or the 13 wickets? Answers to James Whitaker
