HOW TO DEFER LUNCH

By Brian Sanderson

Today the car had two passengers Bob Procter and Brian Senior for the trip to Trent Bridge for the third day of the Sussex match. We were held up by a road diversion which caused me to miss my bacon sandwich.

Sitting near the pavilion ,we had a perfect view of the wicket.Nottingham were seven wickets down at the start of the morning.Within ten minutes they were all out with Sammy Patel getting his century and "Biscuit "Wood  reaching  a half century. Their total was 243 so were leading by 310.

Magoffin got another six wicket haul and the above photograph of him leaving the field. Then the wickets started to fall.My opinion was the wicket was very green and the ball was swinging causing the batsman impossible task to win the match. Just before lunch time the announcer stated that lunch was put back fifteen minutes because Sussex were eight wickets down. This is the first time I have seen this situation and could not understand why it happen.

After lunch Sussex soon lost their final two wickets.
Lunch time score with eleven wickets falling in the session
This left us problem of how to fill the rest of the afternoon watching cricket. However Nottingham Seconds were playing Warwick at the Nottingham Sports Ground or also known as the Boots ground. When we arrived Tony Hutton was already there watching the match.Nottingham were batting with Billy Root and Brett Hutton taking the attack apart. Soon Root reached his fifty and the match was over by three o,clock.

What to do now ? Tony mention there was a match at Caythorpe ,a small village near by.So off we went to see Nottingham under 17 playing Norfolk Second team. Nottingham had scored 183 and Norfolk were batting well. The sun was out and it was a pleasant way to finish the afternoon off.
